PUBLIC transport in the Lancaster area has been given a £2 million boost with the launch of a new fleet of buses.

Stagecoach has funded 12 new low floor, wheelchair accessible buses to operate on the number 3/4 services between Lancaster University and Heysham Combermere Road.

To complement this, Lancashire County Council has spent £400,000 on providing raised platforms at the 141 stops along the route.

In addition, 112 new or refurbished bus shelters have been installed in partnership with the advertising company, Adshel.

Also, 14 sets of traffic signals have been amended to give buses priority.

Coun Cllr Nora Ward, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "I am delighted to be officially launching this latest scheme in Lancaster and I am confident it will recreate the success of the county's other quality bus schemes."
