A NEW ICM poll reveals that 62 per cent of people in the North West are opposed to the adoption of the euro.

The research was carried out on behalf of the anti-euro "no" campaign. It shows just 28 per cent of people in the region are in favour of signing up to the single currency, while ten per cent are sitting on the fence.

David Briggs, North West chairman of Business for Sterling, part of the "no" campaign, said: "The hype surrounding the launch of euro coins and notes has been replaced by reality.

"People in the North West have been consistently opposed to the euro.

"It seems that attempts by the European Commission to dictate tax and spending policies to Gordon Brown, coupled with soaring unemployment in Germany, has focused minds on the real implications of replacing the pound and giving up control of our economy."

Business for Sterling, which has a North West council of more than 60 leading businessmen and women, is part of the "no" campaign against the euro.
