I UNDERSTAND from your recent report that on March 7 Bury Council are to consider Biffa Waste's application to turn Fletcher Bank Quarry at Shuttleworth into a landfill site.

The closure of a similar site in South Wales, as a consequence of its harmful effect on the health of the local population, highlights the situation we will face if this scheme goes ahead.

Moreover, findings reported in the Lancet medical Journal suggested that scientists feared that mothers who live within two miles of a landfill site have a 40 per cent higher chance of giving birth to deformed or damaged babies.

The hundreds of additional lorry journeys on our already congested roads will have a devastating impact on the whole of north Bury.

In my view the planning committee should halt this application once and for all. We must all make Bury Council aware of our objections in the strongest terms by writing as quickly as possible to the chief planning officer at Bury MBC.

ELIZABETH,

Ramsbottom.
