NORTH End fans were today bracing themselves for the announcement that hero manager David Moyes had jumped ship to premiership strugglers Everton.

Despite initally denying an approach had been made by the Toffeemen this morning, a lunchtime statement from Deepdale confirmed that an offical approach had been made.

Walter Smith, Everton's last manager, was sacked this morning.

North End also claim that rumours that Moyes has a clause in his contract allowing him to talk to Premiership clubs are incorrect.

However, there is an understanding that David Moyes will be informed of an approach.

Acting Chairman Derek Shaw said: "In my opinion, David Moyes is the best young manager in football at the moment and it is in our interests not to lose him.

"David is training as normal with the players this morning but myself and Chief Executive Tony Scholes will be sitting down with David Moyes this afternoon to discuss the approach made by Everton."

Tony Scholes, North End's chief executive who this morning denied any move had been made, added: "In any event, we will not allow David to leave unless an adequate compensation package is agreed."

David Moyes has guided North End to two play-off finals and the Second Division Championship since taking over in 1998.

When he took over, they were struggling at the wrong end of Division Two.

He has also established a reputation for bringing on youngsters and having an eye for a bargain.

He has been linked with several Premiership clubs, including Southampton, Manchester United and Derby County.
