A FULWOOD mum remembered, this week, the special visit she had from HRH The Queen Mother after giving birth to her daughter in a Berlin hospital in 1987.

The Queen Mother -- as Colonel in Chief of the Black Watch -- was meeting members of the unit and particularly wanted to meet wives and children.

Tish, 45, of Oakengate, Fulwood, was in Berlin with her husband, Sergeant Major Bill Nicholson, who was stationed there with the Black Watch.

She said: "I was ready to go home as Julia was five days old but she was the only Black Watch baby, so we were lucky enough to meet HRH the Queen Mother who is my favourite member of the royal family.

"She was a lovely lady, she really wanted to see my baby, she came in with a few male officers and we talked for about 15 minutes about life in Berlin and children."

There was a parade for the royal visit with a band which Tish's son William, who was then two years old, attended.

Tish said: "We had a chit chat about the army, and my husband's work in the Black Watch -- a Scottish regiment and the Queen Mum loved Scotland.

"It was an interesting time as the Berlin Wall was still up and we were able to go from East to West. There was a huge difference and you could get 11 Eastern Deutschmarks for one Western, we thought we would be able to buy lots more but when you looked around there was nothing."

Tish returned to Preston with Bill, William and Julia at the end of 1989 and has brought up her children in Fulwood. Bill,46, now retired from the Black Watch, works for a security company.

Julia is preparing for her GCSE's at Archbishop Temple School, St Vincent's Road, Fulwood.

"She doesn't remember her royal visitor, it is the end of an era, but Julia has her whole life ahead of her now," said Tish.
