FIREFIGHTERS from across the district fought a massive blaze at a Heysham warehouse on Wednesday morning.

The Moll Industries site at Middleton Road on the Heysham Business Park was gutted in the blaze, except for a small wing which was saved by the efforts of the fire fighters.

Eight pumps from as far away as Carnforth, Silverdale and Bolton-le-Sands battled the inferno for most of the day.

The three staff who were working at the building and the fire-fighters all escaped unhurt.

A control unit was called in from Preston and an environmental protection unit was drafted in from Burnley.

A relief crew from Preesall was later called in to continue the efforts at the site.

"It looked quite bad initially with the smoke," said leading fire-fighter Phil Rigby: "The environmental protection unit was called in as a precaution.

" Initially, two crews from Lancaster and Morecambe were called, but it became apparent at an early stage that we needed more.

Matthew Hurley, head of the UK Division of US based Moll Industries, said the company leased the building and used it to store products for its factory on Northgate, Morecambe.

"We believe the fire will have minimal impact on our business," he said: "The product we had stored there was not critical to immediate requirements."

Police are treating a fire, which hit a warehouse at Mill Lane, Halton, at 3.30pm on Easter Sunday, as suspicious.

The blaze is believed to have begun in three trailer wagons, where cardboard and plastic caught fire.

The fire spread to the outside of the warehouse.

Fire crews were able to put it out within an hour.
