DISGRACED Blackburn striker Jonathan Walters has been handed the chance to resurrect his career with Second Division-bound Stockport County.

Walters, one of Rovers' brightest young talents, will not wear a Blackburn shirt again after he was recently suspended for a serious breach of club discipline.

However, that has not prevented a posse of other clubs from registering their interest in the prolific 18-year-old marksman.

Stockport chief Carlton Palmer has now jumped to the head of the queue in the battle for his services by offering the Wallasey-born striker a week's trial at Edgeley Park which would commence on Monday.

But I can also reveal another unnamed club - thought to be Bolton - are also preparing to table an offer for the reserve team frontman which could yet scupper any potential move to the Hatters.

"There has been some interest in Jonathan and Stockport have been on to request a week's trial," said chief executive John Williams today.

Walters, who has England and the Republic of Ireland battling for his allegiance, was one of the stars of Rovers' youth team last season as they reached the final of the AXA FA Youth Cup.

However, following an internal investigation into claims that items belonging to his team-mates had gone missing from the training ground dressing room, he has since been suspended by the club and told he will never play for Rovers again.

"It's a very sad situation for everyone connected with the club," said a Rovers insider.

"Everyone had high hopes for Jonathan and we really thought he was going to make the breakthrough into the first team.

"But in light of recent events, the club felt it had no option but to let him go which is a crying shame considering all the time and effort everyone has invested in him."

Walters finished last season as the club's top scorer with 38 goals and he has continued in a similar vein this term, where he is currently the Academy's top scorer.

That kind of form alerted first team boss Graeme Souness who rated the youngster highly. But he has accepted the findings of the investigation, even though that could now see Walters leaving for free.

Club officials will hold out for a fee for the player who looked to have a glowing future ahead of him at Ewood.

But, given the fact he has yet to make a first team appearance for the club, will weaken their hand when it comes to negotiating a settlement and he could end up leaving for as little as £25,000.

Wolves and Middlesbrough -- who recently took him on trial -- have already expressed an interest in signing the striker.

But Stockport boss Palmer still hopes to steal a march on his rivals by inviting the player to spend a week at Edgeley Park where he plans to play him in two reserve team games.

TREVOR Sinclair is still contemplating life away from West Ham - to further his England ambitions.

The West Ham winger handed in a transfer request earlier in the season but withdrew it three months ago after the club placed a £10million price on his head - which Sinclair blasted as "unrealistic".

The Hammers have put an indifferent start to the season behind them and currently occupy eighth place in the FA Barclaycard Premiership - but the 29-year-old is still dreaming of regular European action - and wants to become an England regular.

The one time Rovers target, under Kenny Dalglish, said: "I wouldn't say that the transfer request has been forgotten about.

"Bit I'm looking at things and how they unfold in the summer. I feel I've reached my peak now.

"I want to be playing in Europe now and pitting myself against the best."
