MORE than 100 competitors sped to East Lancashire for the 23rd Hoghton Tower Sprint.

Contenders for the eighth of a mile dash travelled from towns throughout the country and brought a variety of bikes ranging from a 1923 Zenith JAP to a 2002 Honda Fireblade and a full spectrum of machines made between those years.

In total there were 14 different classes from 250cc to 1300cc including both vintage and modern motorbikes.

Proceeds from the event organised by North Western Centre Auto Cycle Union and Marshals North West go to the trustees of Hoghton Tower.

Auto cycle union secretary Mel Simpson said: "We applaud Sir Bernard and Lady de Hoghton for their attitude, enthusiasm and dedication because through the event the tower is able to exist as a local attraction so we thank them for allowing us to run our sprint on their drive."
