SQUIRES Gate proved too hot to handle for Colne on a day when the conditions played a spoiling role.

A strong wind, blowing up the slope, combined with a hard and bumpy pitch made good football difficult, although Colne could have few complaints over the outcome.

Fancied to be among the promoted sides from the NWCL Second Division, the Seasiders forced wave after wave of attacks on the home goal to chalk up a comfortable win

Alex Rawson gave the visitors the lead on 16 minutes, running in to meet a corner, although it wasn't until the later stages that Colne were finally pushed out of the picture.

The league's top scorer Lee Catlow made it 35 for the season in the 75th minutes.

And Paul Paynter grabbed a goal three minutes from time to leave Colne empty handed.

The best chances for John Lister's side fell to former Nelson frontman Jonathan Irvine - who broke his Colne duck against Bacup midweek - but twice he was out of luck as Squires Gate pulled off desperate clearances.
