AN inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of an angler from Clayton-le-Moors who was found dead in the River Ribble.

Fifty-year-old Peter William Ormerod, of Fernlea Drive, Clayton-le-Moors, was found by his son Thomas, 23, on April 2, face down in the water at the rear of the Aspinall Arms at Mitton, near Clitheroe.

Mr Ormerod had spent the day fishing after setting out in the morning with his son, of the same address, but Thomas left at around 2pm.

Thomas went to search for his father when he failed to arrive home by 5pm, and found him in the water.

Police were called to the scene and removed the body with the help of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, who were called in to help because of the steepness of the river bank.

An inquest at Blackburn Town Hall yesterday heard that a post mortem examination had been carried out but the coroner's office was still awaiting results of toxicology and histology tests before an inquest could go ahead.

Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley coroner Michael Singleton adjourned the inquest until June 26.

Mr Ormerod, a former maths teacher at Moorhead School in Accrington, leaves a wife, Gill, and three children, Sarah, Thomas and Hannah.
