SECURITY measures are to be taken to protect a vandalised church where services have been disrupted by gangs of teenagers.

Wesley Methodist Church in Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe, has suffered broken windows, damaged drainpipes, smashed lights and a snapped notice board over the past few months.

Minister, Mr Chris Denney, said the problem was getting worse.

"The gang congregates on the church car park and while I wish to make it clear that the church is not anti-young people, we are seeking planning permission to erect security railings in order to protect the church," he said.

The gang, which sometimes number 30, is said to comprise of youngsters aged ten and over.

Church member Mrs Lucy Ralphs, of Ainsworth Road, said: "The other week we had to stop a service because they were deliberately banging a ball against the window."

Responding to complaints at the latest meeting of Radcliffe Area Board, Inspector John Higson of Radcliffe Township said: "We are aware of the problem and our local bobby has got the matter in hand.

"We may also get our crime reduction officer to go up and have a look at what can be done."

Radcliffe councillors Barry Briggs and Tim Chamberlain have also met with the church to discuss the possibility of awarding it money from the Kickstart fund to improve security measures.

Mr Denney said: "Our church is a place that welcomes young people.

"We have a range of clubs that cater for them, but the money the vandalism is costing us hinders our work with the young."
