COLNE almost pulled off a shock result against the NWCL Second Division's top side.
After half an hour of cagey football, skipper Gary Dalton popped up to unexpectedly fire Colne into the lead.
This joy was short-lived however as Athletic's top scorer Chris Denham got his side back on level terms merely two minutes later.
Obviously buoyed by going into the break all-square, Colne started the second half in determined fashion.
Athletic's pressure finally paid off however with Steve Davis putting the Haslingden-based side into the lead just after the hour mark.
For all their endeavour Colne could not manage to overturn the deficit.
