POLICE in Grimsby today warned travelling Burnley fans to be on their best behaviour ahead of the Clarets' weekend match against the Humberside team.

Humberside Police said they will welcome the thousands of fans expected to make the trip to watch the game -- as long as they behave themselves.

But officers urged fans without tickets not to travel to the seaside town, while those who do were reminded to stay off the pitch.

Police are expecting up to 2,000 fans to make the trip from Lancashire to watch the game -- which is of crucial importance to both sides.

Burnley can take a further step to securing a play-off position if they win while Grimsby are fighting for their Division One lives.

Supt Sean White, of Humberside Police, who is Match Commander for Saturday's game at Blundell Park, said Burnley fans were welcome as long as they behaved themselves.

And he warned fans without tickets for the match not to travel.

He added: "It is the last home game of the season, but not for the teams who each have a vital match the following week. As ever our priority at the match will be the safety and security of those participating and watching.

"My officers and I are not prepared to accept behaviour including drunkenness, fighting, breaches of public order or criminal behaviour. Our policy is of arrest and prosecution if the circumstances warrant it and banning orders preventing future attendance at future matches will be sought.

"We have a close relationship with Grimsby Town Football Club and they wil work with us to ensure that anybody who causes problems at the match will not be afforded access in the future.

"Visiting fans are always welcome and properly looked after when visting Blundell Park, but our intelligence suggests that a relatively small number of supporters from both clubs may be attending who may be seeking a confrontation. I am determined they will not spoil what will be a great day for both teams."

Supt White also reminded fans not to go on to the playing surface at any time, especially at the end of the match.
