MATTERS concerning Gibraltar have recently moved on rapidly and in a most disgraceful fashion. A package of European Union aid of £35 million was announced for Gibraltar, conditional on the territory renouncing its current sovereignty rights.

This is sleaze of the worst possible kind by the British and Spanish governments since they are trying to use bribery to influence the outcome of a democratic vote. Besides, as a member of the European Union, if Gibraltar meets the criteria for economic aid, it should get it without any strings.

Gibraltarians showed just what they thought when 25,000 of the 30,000 population turned out for a demonstration against any Spanish involvement in the running of Gibraltar.

After such a demonstration, any government with an ounce of integrity would immediately cease any further discussions with Spain and would open a much overdue dialogue with the representatives of Gibraltar.
