Coppice Community Centre is organising a seven-a-side football tournament to bring together the communities of Oldham.
The "Oldham Building Bridges Football Tournament" will take place on Sunday, April 14,2002 at Boundary Park.
Teams from Glodwick, Werneth and Coppice will play youth teams from Bury. Also participating will be teams from Oldham Police, Bury Police and the Army.
Dr Sharif Salim, the Coppice Community Centre's Co-ordinator said: "After the recent riots an the Ritchie Report it is apparent that there is not only lack of understanding between youths from different races and cultures residing in Oldham but also with the police force.
"Therefore, holding a football tournament between the various ethnic youth teams and the police is an ideal first step in bridge building. Multiracial youth teams from Bury will also be participating in the tournament.
He added, "I want to thank the following for sponsoring the tournament, the Army, Oldham and Bury Police, Greater Manchester Police Authority and Oldham FC who have kindly agreed to let us hold the tournament at their training ground at Boundary Park.
"We hope to hold this tournament biannually alternatively in Oldham and Bury. We hope that spectators from all races residing in Oldham will be watching the games and supporting their teams."
