A FIVE-A-SIDE football tournament in Nelson attracted over 70 youngsters from around the region.

The day proved to be a great success and was eventually won by Paak United who beat East Coast 4-3 after extra-time. Both teams received a trophy and all the players who took part in the tournament were given a medal.

The tournament was organised by The Prince's Trust Mentoring Project and was held in conjuction with Edge End High School and the Empower Project in Nelson. Nelson and Colne Collge were kind enough to provide use of their sports hall and Hamid Khan, a trainee support worker for the Prince's Trust helped organise the event.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness about the Trust's mentoring project and to encourage access to positive leisure and educational opportunities for young people.

Julie Bateman, Project co-ordinator said, "We wanted to involve young people in a positive way through the medium of sport. We want then to enjoy the football but also to learn the benefits of teamwork, sportmanship and respect for each other."

If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer for the Prince's Trust or would like more information on the project then you can call: Julie Bateman (East Lancashire) on 01282 714160 or Iqbal Khan (Blackburn with Darwen) on 01254 264806.

The Prince's Trust would also like to thank the Time Out Project in Blackburn who have donated a snooker and pool table for young people to use at the Little Harwood Community Centre.
