PLANS for the new Booths supermarket in Lytham are being given the thumbs up by town traders and residents who believe it will boost business.

But some shopkeepers have voiced strong opposition, fearing loss of trade, shop closures and falling property prices.

The preferred site for the store is Haven Road, Lytham, and plans are expected to be considered at Fylde Borough Council's May 22 meeting.

Marjorie Hiles, proprietor of Clifton Street's Linen boutique, welcomes the prospect of the smartening up of the town's southern end.

She said: "Parts of the area around Haven Road and the fire station look derelict and a new quality store like Booths will certainly enhance the area."

However, Marjorie confirms she'll still buy items such as fruit and veg from town centre shops.

Ian Smith, owner of La Borsa leather goods shop in Clifton Street, also pledges his continuing custom to nearby traders.

"I'll still buy cheese and other items from neighbours, but I am also happy to give my support to Booths as a small independent company," he said.

Resident Lesley Thompson, of Hastings Place, who works part-time in Clifton Street's Upstairs Downstairs cafe, is emphatically in favour of the new plans.

"It will be good not to have to go out of town to a supermarket," she says. "And once people are in the town, they're quite likely to walk along the main street and stop to shop or have a coffee."

Ansdell resident, Angela Naylor, of Kintour Road, is delighted at the prospect. "I always shop in Booths anyway. It will be great to have a local supermarket, particularly considering the price of petrol is likely to go up."
