A MAN who bought a small quantity of cannabis found himself involved in a high-speed police car chase.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Kris James Bretana was a passenger in a car which sped off when police indicated to the driver to stop.

And when the car eventually crashed into a lamp post, Bretana quickly got out and told police all he had done was buy some cannabis.

Bretana, 21, of Avalon Way, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £75 costs.

Kevin Preston, defending, said Bretana had been shocked when the driver drove off "like a maniac".

He added: "There was a chase around the streets and after the crash my client got out, handed over the cannabis and said that was all he had to do with the incident."
