BURY has been dealt a double jobs blow.

A local textile company is closing with the loss of around 15 jobs while another firm involved in the same sector is set to lay off ten staff.

Shutting down is Donisthorpe, which is involved in the manufacturing of twisted yarns. It has had a presence in the town for the past 30 years.

But the firm's lease at its base at Peel Mills, which also acts as the company's North West depot, is set to expire soon.

The Leicester-based firm has been making yarns for more than 250 years.

A spokeswoman at the company's head office said: "Our lease has ended and we have to vacate Peel Mills. We are currently talking to our staff."

She declined to comment further or confirm the workers were being made redundant.

Meanwhile, workers at Andrew Textile Industries in Walshaw Road, Bury, are being consulted on redundancies due to a slump in business.

Bosses say they will have to shed ten jobs to reflect a decline in the industry. Currently, 126 people are employed at the premises.

However, negotiations are under way with the individuals concerned, who could be offered work in the group's other divisions.

Managing director Peter Hawarth said: "We have had a downturn in business and have had to enact these redundancies.

"We need to reduce our costs to remain competitive in a worldwide market and to do that we must rationalise our input.

"Nobody has been made redundant as of yet, and we are consulting with individuals about finding alternative work."
