A SUPPORT group for dyslexia sufferers in Leigh and Atherton has hit out at claims that a "cure" has been found for the condition.
The chairman of the Wigan and District Dyslexia Association, Sandra Herrington, said: "There is still a lack of objectivity and a great deal of misconception among professionals and lay people alike. Recently this situation has been exacerbated by the claim.
"It is absolutely essential all teachers, governors, councillors, employers and parents realise there is no cure."
The Association is inviting people to a seminar on April 20, at Wigan Pier to discuss the issues.
In September 2000 in partnership with Wigan LEA and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust the Association set out to recruit 40 teachers trained as specialist multi-sensory teachers. The project's goal was to create a cluster of Dyslexia Friendly Schools. These teachers are now working to try and encourage people to change their attitudes and approaches.
