RESIDENTS living on some of Pendle's poorest housing estates could benefit from new windows, central heating systems, bathrooms and kitchens thanks to a £2.5million government cash boost.

The bumper budget has been allocated to refurbish and improve standards of public sector housing by members of Pendle Council's executive committee.

The approved capital programme for 2002/03, which includes £2,508,000 for works to council housing, will be funded through the government's major repairs allowance as well as revenue contributions from the authority's housing revenue account.

Councillor Azhar Ali, leader of the council, said: "This is a fantastic boost to council housing in Pendle and maintains what is quite a good stock compared to other authorities. We welcome the new government money which has enabled us to go ahead with such exciting programmes.

"This is part of a three-year rolling programme which is now in its second year. It involves installing new windows and doors, new kitchens, new central heating systems and other repairs in areas such as Clover Hill, Horsfield, North Valley and Hodge House." The money will be divided across the borough and will include the funding of adaptations for the disabled, heating systems and conversions.

In the last financial year, for the first time, the capital programme was delivered partly through competitively tendered contracts and partly through negotiated contracts with Operational Services.

This policy will continue during 2002/03 after which it will be reviewed.

Nelson will be allocated £1,013,150, while £2,500 will go to Brierfield, £846,450 to Colne, £3,750 to Foulridge, £312,000 to Barnoldswick, £11,250 to Earby and £125,200 to Fence, with the remainder going towards general repairs and conversions and a stock condition survey.
