ROVERS boss Graeme Souness today revealed that Stig Bjornebye will undergo surgery next week after suffering a fractured eye-socket in an accidental collision.

And an initial prognosis from Rovers' medical staff would suggest that the former Liverpool defender could well miss the start of next season due to the extent of damage.

"Stig has fractured his eye socket and he's going to be out for a long time," said Souness.

"It was a complete accident and he will have an operation next week once the swelling goes down.

"But he's going to be missing for a while because it's a nasty one.

"As things stands, he will miss the start of next season so that's a big blow for him and a big set-back for us."

Bjornebye suffered the injury on the eve of Rovers' game with Newcastle when he got sandwiched between Alan Mahon and Craig Short in a challenge.

He put his arm up to protect his head but the force of the challenge forced his hand back into his face which caused the damage.

Medical staff later confirmed Bjornebye's sight is not in danger as a result of the injury but the Norwegian may well have to have a metal plate inserted into his face once the swelling goes down.

"Stig's currently got blurred vision and that could be the case until he gets operated on," added Souness.

Meanwhile, Lucas Neill suffered concussion following a late challenge by Laurent Robert in last night's game between Rovers and Newcastle at Ewood.

Neill was stretchered off midway through the second half after collapsing in a heap under the weight of the challenge.

And Souness was awaiting an update on the Aussie's condition this morning.

"Lucas was out cold for a while which is why we took him off but he should be okay."
