WHEN Martin Smith (Letters, April 13) talks of UN resolutions concerning Israel, there are a multitude to consider -- perhaps resolution 242 which reminded Israel of "the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war," or 681 calling on Israel to stop the mass deportations of Palestinians from captured territory and reminded them of the Geneva conventions.

He should remember that "tiny" Israel has a massive military arm with the most modern equipment, whereas the Palestinians have rifles and bricks. He should also recall that it has since 1967 occupied large land areas gained from attacks on surrounding countries.

And contrary to Mr Smith's assertion, there are agreements which recognise the states of Israel and Palestine, all of which demand withdrawal by Israel from those captured areas.

Today, we see the military might of Israel smashing its way through unprotected villages and towns, deliberately demolishing houses, confining the people without food, shooting at anyone, even the unarmed news people of the BBC, and all within Palestine. Not really an act of self defence.
