BURY businesses are being warned not to fall victim to a potentially misleading website payment letter.

Bolton and Bury Chamber say one of its members received what looked like an invoice from an organisation called Central Web Pages Register Ltd. But, according to Kay Gregson of the Chamber, in reality the letter was from a registration officer.

Alerting members, she says: "They are asking for £192 plus VAT and a prominent panel says 'Important note, the service is accepted on receipt of payment. In the event of non-payment, the web address will be disconnected online under the domain stated above'."

Kay added: "At first glance, and even second, the unwary could fall into the trap of thinking they must pay to retain their web address.

"In reality, what is on offer is the registration under the domain of Central Web Pages and not your own registration.

"If you receive this document, be sure that you and your staff are aware of what you are paying for."
