GUESTS at the first-ever fundraising ball in aid of Lancashire's voluntary emergency service Med Alert, were serenaded by music courtesy of a group of the doctors from the on-call service.

The 220 guests at the sell-out event held at Mytton Fold hotel, in Langho, enjoyed music by the group, along with after dinner entertainment by comedian Phil Cool.

Organisers were hoping to raise up to £6,000 from the event, which also featured a raffle and could become an annual fixture.

Dr Grant McKeating, who provides cover for the Clitheroe and Ribble Valley area, organised the event.

"It is the first of its kind, and we may look at making it an annual event.

"Local businesses were generous with their prizes for the raffle."

Med Alert, which was set up in 1988 as a registered charity, currently has 14 doctors providing emergency cover across the whole of Lancashire.

The money will go towards the costs of medical equipment needed for emergencies.

Between April 2000 and March 2001, the service was called on more than 500 times, with doctors supporting the Lancashire Ambulance Service.
