THE problems created by the ITV Digital crisis could threaten Burnley manager Stan Ternent's rebuilding programme.

While clubs in the Nationwide League are waiting to find out how much, if any, money they can salvage from the doomed company, there are concerns that key targets will be snapped up by others.

At the weekend striker David Johnson has been linked with a move to Leicester City, newly relegated to the first division.

The 25-year-old made a big impression with five goals in eight games after arriving at Turf Moor on loan from Nottingham Forest.

He admitted he was playing for a permanent move after an unhappy spell at the City Ground and confirmed it was the chance of playing for Ternent again that persuaded him to come to Burnley. But his goalscoring exploits will have caught the eye of rival clubs.

New Leicester boss Micky Adams is looking to add to his squad at bargain basement prices at the same time as off-loading big name stars such as Robbie Savage, Muzzy Izzett and Ian Walker.

With guaranteed parachute payments from the Premier League he does at least know what budget he is working within and that might offer him the chance of making a move for Johnson.

Despite not being out of contract, the striker is available for nothing as Forest just want to get his wages off the books.

Ternent has made no secret of his desire to keep Johnson at Turf Moor and the fans took him straight to their hearts after he scored five times in his first six games in the claret and blue.

Another potential summer target is keeper Marlon Beresford, the former Claret who is out of contract at Middlesbrough in a few weeks time.

Like Johnson he was a big hit on loan at Turf Moor this season and he is another player that Ternent has confirmed he would like to see in his squad.

Meanwhile, having played in a Rangers side in Stuart McCall's recent testimonial, Paul Gascoigne is still in demand and he is set to feature in an England side in a match played in honour of Reading midfielder Phil Parkinson.

Gascoigne will be alongside fellow England legend Stuart Pearce in the game at the Madejski Stadium next Monday.
