WHILE the nation holds its breath, hoping that injured England captain David Beckham's foot recovers in time for the World Cup, one lad is having to keep an eye on his own injury.

Young gymnast Harry Kampz, is in training for the biggest tournament of his life -- the finals of the National Development Programme, run by the British Gymnastics Association -- but was horrified when he broke his toe last week.

The nine-year-old has only been doing gymnastics for three years and already has a number of medals under his belt.

Harry, who lives in Inkerman Street, Preston, entered a national competition last year and came first in the vaulting event before scooping a silver medal for his team.

And despite breaking his toe, he's determined to be ready for the next big competition in July. Harry said: "I was on the bars, did a forward somersault and landed wrong!"

Harry, who trains for a tiring 12 hours a week, doing floor vaults and spinning on the high bar, is hoping his injury should take no more than a few weeks to heal.

Mum Sharon said: "I'm absolutely buzzing for him. He really likes gymnastics. He's starting to get into motorbikes now but we are trying to keep him with gymnastics!"

Harry trains for a tiring 12 hours a week, doing floor vaults and spinning on the high bar.

And his punishing training routine more than paid off when Harry, who attends St Anthony's Primary School, St Anthony's Drive, Preston, was picked for the big finals.

After taking part in the regional finals as an individual competitor, Harry came sixth, and was selected for the final, North West team, for the Newcastle-based competition.

Sharon said: "He is looking forward to it. It's a bit harder this year, though. They've changed it this time round and it's a bit more difficult.

"He is so strong for a little person, and he's quite confident."
