PRESTON council chiefs are hoping the Queen's Jubilee will be remembered in the city for a long time to come.

And to ensure that happens, they are urging housing developers to name new roads after the special event.

Peter Corless, assistant director of engineering at Preston City Council, said: "If a developer comes to us with suggestions we will say to them, 'why not go away and think about the Jubilee?'"

Developers usually suggest names to the council who go away and check they have not already been used.

But sometimes, they ask the council for any suggestions for new developments. The Environment Directorate, which includes engineering, street signs and architecture departments, then make a suggestion. Mr Corless said: "As soon as we get some queries in, we will suggest the Jubilee theme. The Queen's visit here is certainly something we will be thinking about."

In the past, former Prestonians who held the Victoria Cross have been honoured, and more recently, Sir Tom Finney, cricketer Andy Flintoff, and soul star Stephen Bayliss have all had streets named after them.

Mr Corless added: "If someone has a good idea, then we can use it."

South Ribble Borough Council made the timeless tribute to the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 when they named Jubilee Court in West Paddock, Leyland.

And Preston already has its own royal address, Jubilee Avenue, Fulwood, which has existed since 1937.
