ROADS were closed off by police for three hours after a suspicious package was discovered near a local synagogue.

The alarm was raised by a resident at 1.30pm on Monday (June 10) after they spotted an abandoned package next to the Central and North Manchester Synagogue in Leicester Road, Broughton Park.

Police cordoned off the roads around Leicester Road and bomb disposal experts were called in.

Nearby Broom Lane was also closed due to an unrelated problem involving a tree which had fallen down.

Some residents, shopkeepers and businesses were asked to evacuate their premises by the police helicopter but most people were asked to stay indoors while investigations were made. A controlled explosion was carried out on the package at 4pm and residents were allowed back into their homes and the roads re-opened at 4.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "The package turned out to be a mechanical box possibly from a vehicle and there was no suggestion that the package was suspicious.
