PREPARATIONS are well under way for Blackburn's biggest multi-cultural community event of the year.

Corporation Park will be the setting for the Blackburn Mela, which, over the weekend of July 13 and 14, will play host to a diverse range of music and activities.

Organisers are hoping that over 20,000 people a day will flock to the event which is being seen as a symbol of unity among the various communities within the town.

Naushad Surve, chairman of the Mela organising committee said: "We want to be able to look at each others' differences and learn from them and learn to respect them.

"Blackburn is demonstrating a clear vision, giving the opportunity to all communities to be part of this major event."

A wide range of entertainment is being laid with something for all age groups and tastes.

On the main stage a number of prominent acts and bands have already been confirmed with more to follow.

Definitely lined up is one of the biggest names in Asian pop Ibrar-ul-Huq, the band Stereonation who made such a big impression at last year's event and legendary bhangra singer Salinder Pardesi.

There is a wide range of music and dance on offer during the two-day festival with Mr Lu's Chinese Dragon Dance and Martial Arts Show and leading samba band Congoma.

For fans of Bollywood, Imran's 4x4 Dance Troupe will bring a mix of East-West fusion fresh from choreographing a number of major film routines as well as appearing the hit film Khabhi Kushi Khabhi Gham.

In addition to the major names, there will be a second stage showcasing the talents of local bands throughout the festival. For the children there will be a special activity crche where youngsters under 14 can be left with trained staff.

Entrance to the Mela will be free but the organisers are hoping the everyone will make a donation of £1 which will go to the charity Warchild and to help fund Ibrar-ul-Huq hospital appeal in his native Pakistan.

"The Mela will be a chance for communities to come together and celebrate their diversity and traditions," said Naushad.
