WITH respect to Mrs l Rackley (Letters, June 21) it is not true that "if you are a Darwen parent who chooses to send your child to the nearest Catholic secondary school, you have to pay bus fares."
The majority of children/parents will still receive free travel as they live more than three miles from the school concerned (St Bede's). Only those living under three miles have to pay. This is a provision of the 1944 Education Act.
I appreciate that there is no Catholic secondary school in Darwen, but this is a matter for the Catholic authorities, who can set up a school in Darwen if they so desire.
COUN DAVE SMITH (Sunnyhurst Ward), Avondale Road, Darwen.
