THE Royal Lancashire Show is back in full swing at Chorley's Astley Park, from July 26-28.

After being hit last year by the foot and mouth epidemic, which forced an animal ban, the show invites visitors to come face-to-face with their countryside neighbours and offers exhibitors the chance to win trophies and compete in qualifying rounds for external competitions.

The event, which dates back to 1767 and is organised by the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society, features 17 sections from horticulture to shire horses and local produce.

Visitors can learn more about countryside pursuits from hawk flying to beekeeping and take part in Ladies Day -- inspired by Royal Ascot -- when prizes will be offered for the best dressed visitors.

North West members of the Women's Institute will be hijacking the spirit of the Commonwealth Games at the show with exercise machines and advice on healthy eating to celebrate their theme -- Fitness is Fun. They'll be joined by Red Cross members who will be at the WI marquee to give therapeutic massages. Amateur gardeners will exhibit the fruits of their labour along with members of various gardening and allotment clubs.

The National Ladies Showjumping Championship is set to return to the show after a two-year break.

Tickets, cheaper pre-booked, range from £4-£5 (children), £8-£10 (adults), £20-£25 (family), £5-£6 (concessions) and free for under fives. Tickets and bookings are available at any Tourist Information Centre or call 01254 813769.

The Chorley Citizen has five family tickets (two adults and up to three children) to give away. For a chance to win answer the following question: How many sections are there in the RLS?

Answers on a postcard or sealed envelope to The Chorley Citizen, 47-47 Pall Mall, Chorley, PR7 3CT, before Friday, July 12. The first correct entry pulled out after the closing date will be the winner. The editor's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Employees of this newspaper, their families and anyone connected with this competition are not eligible to enter.
