A NEW moves to encourage parents to take their children to swimming lessons have been launched in Hyndburn.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, drowning is the third largest cause of accidental death in children in the UK and it is on the increase.

An initiative throughout Hyndburn Leisure Centres will see youngsters progress from being 'cygnets' to 'sharks' while having fun and learning about essential water safety skills.

The Swimming Teachers Association has devised new courses for the leisure centre in Accrington and Mercer Hall Leisure Centre in Great Harwood.

Adele Sutton, of The Swimming Teachers' Association, said: "Drowning can happen anywhere, whether it be in a garden pool, a pond or a river, so safety in and around water is the largest incentive for parents to sign their children to the Leisure Centre's swim courses."

The initiative recognises that children learn to swim at different ages and at varying paces so the scheme has a series of awards from Cygnet to Shark.

Bronwyn Von Noortwijk, swim co-ordinator at Hyndburn Leisure Centre, said: "The STA are the only UK swimming organisation to incorporate a comprehensive water safety and awareness programme into its qualifications.

"Gone are the days when a swimming lesson comprised a number of kids lining up in rows along the side of the pool, cold and bored."
