FEMALE lovers adore the island of Lesvos, where, apart from the obvious, there's plenty to do and see.

Set like a sapphire in the glittering east Aegean sea, Lesvos is the birthplace of Sappho, the outspoken, erotic poetess of the ancient world whose vibrant and intimate words evoked the passion, desire and suffering of woman-love.

Favourite picturesque resort, Skala Eressos, nestles on the south west side of the island and boasts a three km sandy beach with nude bathing and women only areas. And for the ultimate in isolated sisterhood, there's women only accommodation available in the village's Antiopi pension, with its pretty courtyard and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Quiet, unspoilt and traditional and housing a couple of old churches plus an archaeological museum, Skala Eressos is set against a backcloth of olive groves, fragrant pine trees and vineyards. It's the perfect spot to relax in one of the several cafe bars or tavernas, sample the local fresh grilled sardines, usually served with crisp salad, and sip an ice-cold ouzo from a long, tall glass.

Direct flights go from Manchester and Gatwick every Thursday from May to October.

Trevor Dixon, proprietor of Treasure Travel in Highfield Road, Blackpool, who is an agent for Europe's largest gay holiday company, Respect Holidays, specialises in holidays to Lesvos.

"I found there was a niche in the market and decided to focus on holidays for lesbian singles, couples and groups on Lesvos," he says.

"This side of the business is growing every year and I've arranged packages for about 400 clients who'll be travelling to the island this summer. "

Trevor also knows the top hotspots for gay men looking for fun and frolics.

"Head for Gran Canaria's Playa del Inglese. It's cosmopolitan and popular with Scandinavian tourists," he says. "Or for couples who may prefer a smaller, less bustling resort, Maspalomas is ideal."
