COUNCILLORS have welcomed a report which could lead to a major overhaul for Todmorden Swimming Pool.

The baths, which opened just two years ago after Calderdale Council approved the £4.5million ultra-modern pool, could now be further developed by charity Sport England who became involved when a major fault was discovered.

Health and safety officers ordered one end to be roped off following the discovery of a manufacturing fault and the chairman of the community services panel Coun Olwyen Jennings called for an officers' report.

Coun Jennings said: "We have looked into the problems before, but I am still not happy that local people can't use the centre to its full potential.

"The centre is a great asset for Todmorden, but it could be an even better one.

"We need to find out what options are available to us and decide what to do to make sure that people get the full use."

Coun Michael Goldthorpe, chairman of Todmorden Town Council's Amenities Committee, said: "When the baths opened at first we all thought it was a state of the art building, which would be of great benefit to the people of Todmorden.

"This was a serious setback and I am pleased that Sports England are now getting involved to have a look at what is the best way forward and I hope that Calderdale officers will be able to put something positive forward."
