Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School broke Darwen Vale's stranglehold on the Blackburn Schools Athletics Championship after winning the boys competition for the first time in 14 years.

QEGS won three of the four age groups to be crowned overall champions after clocking up 262 points -- 90 ahead of runners-up Darwen Vale with St Wilfrid's in third place.

Westholme again dominated the girls competition and won every age group to be crowned girls overall champions with a massive 316 points.

Nine records were broken in the girls competition with Natalie Duxbury of Our Lady and St John's and Westholme's Anna Griffiths each setting two new best performances.

Duxbury clocked 13.03 seconds to win the year nine 100m then made it a sprint double to win the 200m in another record time of 26.73s.

Griffiths' record breaking feats came in the field with a throw of 26.40m was the best ever seen in the year nine discus competition.

In the year seven age group Jyoti Abrol of Westholme was the star of the show after winning the 100m in a record time of 13.95s.

Darwen Vale's Samathan Lang had a good day setting a new record in the long jump with a leap of 4.31m and also winning the hurdles in 13.42.

Westholme dominated the year nine event with three pupils setting new records with Rachel Coar winning three events.

Coar won the hurdles in 13.45 and the high jump with a clearance of 1.5m before saving her best until last to set a new record in the javelin with a throw of 29.5m

Team-mate Lucy Hunt won the discus with a record breaking distance of 22.30m.

And Lucy Caunce, also of Westholme, rewrote the record books with a throw of 8.25m to win the shot put.

In the boys year seven competition, Curtis Pearce was in top form when the St Bede's pupil won the 1500m in a best ever time of 4.52.39 then showed his versatility to win the high jump with a leap of 1.30m.

In year eight, Beardwood's Arfan Ayub set a record in the discus with a throw of 27.89 while QEGS star pupil Josh O'Keefe won the high jump with a best ever clearance of 1.60m.

Frank Fielding of QEGS was a triple winner in the year nine age group after winning the 100m and 200m with times of 12.29 and 25.34 respectively and also winning the long jump with a leap of 5.24m.

And team-mate Pardip Bansal was another to rewrite the record books to win the high jump with a leap of 1.65m.
