A COMMUNITY centre in Darwen has won its battle against the elements and is still on course to carry out its extensive summer programme.

The Earcroft Community Base, with its headquarters below Hollins Grove Congregational Church, was severely damaged by the floods which hit East Lancashire three weeks ago.

The water came in under the church front door, went through the floorboards and the ceiling of the community centre.

Michelle Rutherford, Earcroft development officer, said: "There was six inches of water, but we've tried to carry on regardless."

While renovation work can go ahead downstairs in the centre, operations of the Earcroft Community base has transferred upstairs to the church. But things were not much better there. "The church was obviously in a state too and, to be honest, it still is," said Michelle.

The base is funded by Blackburn with Darwen Council and the Children's Fund Local Network, run by the Government. Mrs Rutherford said: "Hopefully the church insurance can pay for a new ceiling and floor. The builders have said they might come next week.

"It is testament to all the hard work of the Earcroft staff that despite the disruption they still have a summer programme jam-packed with fun for children and parents alike."

Four family coach trips have been organised. On Friday, July 26, they are off to Southport. A week later they are due to visit Gulliver's World in Warrington.

A trip to Tatton Park is planned for August 23 and the summer will end with a visit to the Albert Docks in Liverpool.

There's also a soccer school, run at Blackburn Rovers, the council's 'Summer Slam' event, and the Darwen Gala. 'Computer creation' sessions have also been introduced for children. To take part in any of these events contact Michelle Rutherford on 01254 775248 or 07763052467.
