THE sounds of Asia will be heard in Victoria Park on Sunday when the annual Nelson Mela takes place.

Last year 5,000 people turned up and organisers are hoping the Mela will be even bigger and better this time.

Organised by the Funkaar and Mid Pennine Arts crews in conjunction with the Nelson Mela committee, the event will run between 2 and 8pm.

The headline act at 6pm will be Mohamed Raza who specialises in Urdu singing and has a massive following in Pakistan, where his concerts attract crowds of 100,000.

He will perform Urdu film songs and traditional ones with poetry-based lyrics.

The Mela will start with Unique Sounds at 2pm, then Via Samba at 2.50pm, followed by young psychedelic pop rock group 'The Brothers with Different Mothers' at 3.20pm.

The Dhamak Collective appear at 4.05pm followed by Imran Ali, one of Pakistan's most famous singers, who will perform Asian pop songs.

In the park there will be art workshops, kite and banner making, circus skills, embroidery, body art, face and henna painting, and food stalls.
