POLICE today revealed they were to put more officers on the street during the summer holidays in a bid to crack down on juvenile crime.

Officers from Pennine Police in Pendle said the new initiative was designed to prevent trouble and damage caused by bored teenagers who could turn to vandalism and crime for amusement.

Sergeant Viki Haworth, of Colne Police, said patrols were being increased during the evening and into the night to prevent any incidents of criminal damage, juvenile nuisance and burglary.

She said: "If anyone has any information to pass on to us about anything they see which they may think is suspicious we would be grateful to hear about it.

"This is a pro-active move in Colne and surrounding areas and we will be focusing on school buildings. We will be checking premises and hopefully preventing the break-ins which happen during the holidays.

"During the school holidays we get children playing in the school yards and then damage is caused to the premises either accidentally or on purpose. It is quite difficult for us because we don't get to know about it until a while later when the culprits have gone.

"Hopefully having more patrols about will act as a deterrent to them."

Anyone who sees people hanging around schools or causing trouble should contact the police on 01282 425001.
