ROYAL Lytham's Paul Eales completed his most successful ever Open Golf Championship, on Sunday, with a final round of 67 at Muirfield. His three previous rounds of 73, 71 and 76 gave him an overall tournament score of 287. Last year he failed to qualify for the Open when it was held on his home course.
On the final day at Muirfield, Eales partnered American Phil Mickleson -- rated No. 2 in the world -- and finished three shots ahead of the American on the day and for the tournament.
In fact there were several well-known names who trailed behind Paul's overall score, including Tway, Katayama, Lawrie, Faldo, Calcavecchia and Montgomerie.
South African Ernie Els won the Claret Jug after a four-way play off and then a sudden death play off with Frenchman Thomas Levet.
