ENGLAND's Commonwealth Gold medal sprint hopefuls Mark Lewis-Francis and Dwain Chambers both failed to finish the 100m Final.
Lewis-Francis and Chambers threatened before the race to smash through the 10-second barrier in their battle for title, but both pulled up with hamstring problemsin front of a capacity 38,000 crowd at the City of Manchester stadium.
Both were bidding to win the most coveted gold medal and become the first Brits to legally break the 10-second barrier on a home track. The race was won by Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis, to pick up his country's first ever gold medal.
Before the race, 19-year-old Lewis-Francis , who has twice clocked an illegal 9.97secs including one in Sheffield last month when Chambers won in 9.95secs, said; "I know that there is a sub 10secs in me.
"This is my first Commonwealth Games and I want to go home with a medal, that is important to me. My mind is only thinking about the gold."
