A MAN who had threatened suicide killed himself with an overdose of painkillers and anti-depressants, an inquest found.

Thomas Barbour, of Glebe Close, Accrington, was found at his home by his partner in April.

Dorothy McCartney told the inquest in Accrington he had threatened or attempted suicide several times. He had been in Blackburn Royal Infirmary on two separate occasions in the last 12 months after previous attempts.

Mrs McCartney, of Cotton Street, Accrington, had had a 20-year relationship with Mr Barbour.

Coroner Michael Singleton said Mr Barbour was an alcoholic who also suffered from angina, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

On the day he died Mrs McCartney said her partner had been trying to mend his mobility buggy and she was concerned he would electrocute himself.

"'He said 'It doesn't matter, nobody will miss me,' " she said.

Mrs McCartney went to work but left early because she was worried about Mr Barbour.

When she got to his house she found him and telephoned for an ambulance.

Mr Singleton said Mr Barbour had taken two and a half times the amount of dihydrocodeine needed to kill him, and enough tamazapan to kill him. He had also taken other tablets and alcohol.

"I can only conclude his intention was to take his life," he said.
