A DRIVER who gave false details when stopped by police did the same thing again a few months later when confronted by the same officer.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Mohammed Nazir, 25, appeared in court and then went to Pakistan for 12 months.

The defendant had never had a licence, gave two different names to police but no-one else was arrested.

Nazir was told by Judge Lesley Newton that what he did the first time normally justified a custodial sentence but he had then carried on behind the wheel and was stopped again.

Jailing him for two months, the judge said she had no alternative. The administration of justice depended on the right person being charged with an offence.

Nazir, of Kendal Street, Nelson, admitted two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice and using an uninsured vehicle.

The court was told the defendant was stopped last July and gave incorrect details to a police officer. A summonse were issued, nobody attended court and another was issued. In November the same officer again stopped Nazir and again he gave false details.

Robert Crawford, defending, said Nazir had gone abroad for 12 months. His father had been ill, his wife was there and he had been trying to get her entry into this country.
