A YOUNG golf ace is driving forward for the chance of a lifetime to study his sport in Florida.

Gary Spann (20), of Stanley Street, Whitefield has been offered a scholarship at Lynn University to play for its top golf team and study PE for a year.

The university, which Gary contacted on the Internet, is so keen for him to go that they have improved his original scholarship offer.

Even though the college has met most of the $24,000 fees, Gary's family still face a shortfall of around £3,000.

His mum, Cheryl Everett, said: "We have tried every avenue we can think of to raise the rest of the money but we are coming up against a brick wall now. Gary is due to fly out in two weeks and if he can keep in the top three in the team the university will pay for him to stay another year."

If Gary, who is a member of Stand Golf Club, can keep up his performance he will be able to stay in America for up to four years.

Cheryl added: "Gary wants to be a professional golfer and this is his only chance. His idol is Tiger Woods and he spends every spare minute playing."

With a handicap of two, Gary has been playing the sport since the age of 12 and has captained the North West Manchester Team and represented the county.
