POLICE have appealed for witnesses after an 84-year-old woman suffered what they called a "terrifying" ordeal at the hands of a robber in her home.

The pensioner was at home in Hozier Street, Blackburn, when a man walked in through the front door, which was slightly open.

After stealing money from the living room, he confronted the woman and forcibly made her take him round the house.

He threatened her with violence unless she gave him more money.

Eventually the thug left the house and ran off down the street, leaving the woman, who lives alone, with severe bruising and cuts.

The incident took place at 10.50am on Sunday, and the woman was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where she received treatment, but was not detained.

The man was white, in his 20s, 6 ft tall, slim, with collar-length scruffy dark hair and stubble.

Sgt Sally Riley, from Blackburn CID, said the woman was "deeply distressed" by the attack, and said police and relatives were keeping an eye on her welfare.

"This was an absolutely terrifying ordeal for the old lady," said Sgt Riley.

"She is 84 and I would describe her as brave for initially resisting his requests, but ultimately she was overwhelmed.

"Residents are reminded, especially during the warm weather, to keep external doors shut unless they can see who is trying to gain admission to prevent further incidents of this kind."

Anyone with any information about the man or similar attacks, is asked to contact Blackburn CID on 01254 353567, or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
