GRAEME Souness will take his summer spending to £5 million today by wrapping up the signing of Coventry City star David Thompson.
The 23-year-old midfielder was due in Blackburn this morning to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical after Rovers agreed a fee with the Sky Blues late last night.
And Souness is now confident he will finally get his man in time to beat Saturday's transfer deadline after freeing up some cash following the sale of Hakan Unsal back to Galatasaray.
"We've agreed a deal with Coventry so the boy will have his medical today and we'll then discuss personal terms," said Souness.
"I don't want to say much more at this stage until he actually puts his signature on a contract.
"But, obviously, if he does sign then I'd be absolutely delighted because we've been chasing him for a while."
Souness first confirmed his interest in the former Liverpool star after we exclusively broke the story at the end of last season.
However, subsequent attempts to persuade City to sell fell on deaf ears until Rovers finally had a bid accepted last night.
"We first made contact with Coventry at the start of the summer and expressed an interest but we couldn't agree any kind of deal," said chief executive John Williams.
"But we then made a new offer on Monday night, they had a board meeting yesterday, and we finally agreed on a deal last night.
"So we'll start to talk personal terms today and hopefully we'll be able to wrap things up."
As I understand it, Rovers could end up paying around £2.5 million for the player depending on certain add-ons.
And that will represent excellent business when you consider that City wanted £4 million at the start of the summer.
Rovers raised some of the cash for the transfer by recouping the money they paid for Unsal by selling him back to Galatasaray last night, as we revealed on Saturday.
