MOTORISTS who refuse to put the brakes on their speed were today told where 100 new speed cameras across Lancashire were to be installed.

Work will begin on installing the equipment over the next month and will result in 230 cameras being in operation by the end of September.

That total will rise to about 500 by the end of 2004, when the three year road safety project, which involves all fines money being pumped back into more cameras, comes to an end.

The Lancashire Road Safety Partnership expects £ 20million will have been raised through £60 fines by then, which will mainly be spent on more cameras and publicity blitzes.

The extra camera sites will be a mixture of fixed cameras and mobile cameras, where the police park up for a set period of time New sites for Lancaster are: B5321, Torrisholme Road, near Elmsdale Close, Lancaster, B5321, Euston Road, near Morecambe Bay Primary School, Morecambe, A589, Heysham Road, near Penrith Avenue, Morecambe, A6, By Pass Road, near Main Road, Bolton-le-Sands, A6, Scotforth Road, near University entrance, Lancaster University, A6, Scotforth Road, near Victoria Avenue, Lancaster A6, Scotforth Road, near Burrow Lane, Bailrigg, Lancaster.

"The aim is to further demonstrate that speeding will not be tolerated because it puts lives at risk."

The extra cameras have been criticised by the RAC Foundation, the campaigning arm of the motoring organisation.

A spokesman said: "The fact so much money is being made from the cameras shows that they are not working."
