WIGAN St Pat's recorded their biggest ever win over old rivals Leigh Miners Rangers on the opening day of the National Conference season.

Miners could not match the pace, power or enthusiasm of St Pat's who rattled up a 42-10 victory. On this evidence it's going to be a long hard season for the Miners.

St Pat's never looked back after being gifted an 11th minute interception try when Gary Bradbury went the length of the field.

Half-backs Darren Fletcher and Shaun Boylan were in top form while pack men Mel Alker, Steve Dunn and Jon Chamberlain were a constant threat to an overworked home defence.

Fishwick added the goal points to Bradbury's try and also converted after further tries from Anthony Atherton and Fletcher who pounced after Miners full-back Darren Pilkington had collided with a post.

Miners pulled a try back through Lee Patterson, goaled by Chris Lee, but St Pat's were well in control at half time with an 18-6 lead.

The Miners display in the second half was just as bad. Tim Sharkey ploughed in for a fourth St Pat's try and Alker left three defenders in his wake to grab another.

Patterson pulled a try back but it was only a temporary respite as St Pat's finished strongly with further tries from Boylan and Fletcher with Fishwick taking his goals tally to seven.

This Saturday the Miners travel to Ideal Isberg.
