PUPILS and their parents are being urged to put their best foot forward to support National Walk to School Week.

Bury Metro's Road Safety Unit, which covers Ramsbottom, is helping to promote the event from September 30 to October 4.

It was launched locally on Saturday together with European Car Free Day in the Market Place, Bury.

Executive member for environment and transport Coun Stella Smith said: "The school run accounts for a large proportion of rush-hour traffic, which in turn causes congestion, pollution and danger outside most schools.

"If more families were able to walk to school then communities would experience the environmental and health benefits associated with fewer vehicles on the roads in their neighbourhoods."

Bury Metro's Road Safety Unit will be sending out information packs to every primary school child in the area, outlining how they can take part in the week.
