EARBY's Glen Chapple has becaome the Lancashire county club's player of the year.

The award is recognition of his all-round consistency with more than 50 wickets and almost 500 runs, as well as his durability in playing in every single Championship match.

Chapple said: "All the lads deserve it, not just me, they've all worked extremely hard this season. It's been an honour to play alongside them."

Batsman David Byas has made more history by becoming the first player to be awarded county caps by both Lancashire and Yorkshire.

But he has still to make any decision on whether to delay his retirement by another year.

The 39-year-old was capped after his first season with Lancashire at the LBM players' awards dinner on Sunday night - 11 years after receiving his Yorkshire cap.

Alec Swann, Mark Chilton and Chris Schofield were also capped.

"It's a great honour, although I didn't know about the history," said Byas - who also became the first man to score a Championship century for each of the Roses rivals in Lancashire's last home game of the season against Warwickshire earlier this month.

"I have really enjoyed the season with Lancashire, and this is a good way to round things off.

"But I still haven't decided whether to have another year with Lancashire or not. There's a lot to think about."

Swann joins Byas in receiving his Lancashire cap after a single season at Old Trafford, but he has been much more consistent than the Yorkshire veteran since arriving from Northampton, reaching 1,000 first class runs for the first time in his career.

He also made history by hitting a century in each of his first two Roses matches - the first man to do so since Geoff Boycott.

Chilton could not manage a Championship century all season but his opening partnership with Swann has become Lancashire's most reliable since Graeme Fowler and Gehan Mendis - and he has also enjoyed great success in one-day cricket.

For Schofield, a Lancashire cap is a good way to end another up and down year in which he spent two months in the second team before re-establishing himself as an all-rounder in August.

Neil Fairbrother and Graham Lloyd were both honoured too in a presentation by the Lancashire chairman, Jack Simmons, each player receiving a commemorative engraved silver plate from the club in recognition of their services to the county.

Young pace bowler, James Anderson also received honours when he was announced as LBM's Player of the Month for August.
